The Wyrmwood Pencil in Action
Our very own Christopher Bennett was kind enough to sit down for a brief chat with us for you all. This time around we decided to record it for better quality.
Oh, and he drew something, too! Check it out:
Wood Unlocks
Let's get to the final set! These are some of the most visually striking woods out there, so we don't think you'll be disappointed.
Character
We've gotten some questions concerning "character," so this update seemed a good time to explain a bit. To start with, what is it? Well, the best way to think of it is that character refers to aesthetic qualities that are unusual for a given species of wood.
These can include, but are not limited to, knots, voids, figure and sapwood (a section of wood that is markedly different in coloration - usually lighter - than is the norm in a given species).
Tastes vary, and people can have very different reactions to character. We've shown the exact same piece to different individuals - the same traits that one felt ruined it made another fall in love with it. So we'll be allowing you to indicate, when the pledge manager survey comes around after the campaign, whether or not you'd prefer character in your pieces - we'll do our best to accommodate (depending on how much we have, naturally).
For a few examples, you can look at the following woods on the campaign page - Kingwood (the lighter sections are great examples of sapwood - this would be considered character). English Yew and Mesquite both feature a bit of this type of character, as well.
Bird's Eye Maple features bird's eye figuring, hence its name. However, it's common to the wood, so it isn't really considered "character" - the idea is that it's an unusual trait. English Wych Elm Burl is basically all character. For a piece from either of these to be labeled as having character, it has to be extreme - and that's very rare.
If you'd like to see more examples of most of these woods to get an idea what's typical and what's not, feel free to stop by the custom wood list on our site. Most woods in this campaign are featured there, and each has a page with information, photos and various samples.
The takeaway is this - if you're a fan of natural variation, love pieces that stick out like a sore thumb, and don't mind surprises, character may be a good fit! But if the thought of a knot, streak of sapwood, or even a void seem like traits that mar an otherwise perfect piece, character may not be for you. There is no correct answer - but we recommend avoiding it as the default, unless you feel sure character is for you. Rest assured that there is no piece that will look like all the others - these are all going to be unique, beautiful pieces, thanks to nature itself.
So what if you get your piece and you're unhappy with the look? Thankfully, you don't need to worry. Whether you opt for character or not, our Craftsman's Promise covers you - just get in touch and we'll be happy to swap it out for something more along the lines of what you were hoping for. But we're confident that each and every piece we send out is one that someone is going to love.
We can't wait to get to work creating them for you! And that seems as good a note as any to wrap up on tonight! Until next time!
