Plenty of Moving Parts

Hello, backers!

We're sure you're wondering what we've been up to in the past couple of weeks. Well, we're here to tell you... moving!

More or Less an Accurate Representation
More or Less an Accurate Representation

Last week we finished moving to a bigger, better facility.  We'd been talking about it and thinking about it for some time, but this Kickstarter (read: you!) allowed us to finally act on it.  With the new shop, we're positioned to optimally utilize the space, and stretch out in the ways we'll need to, moving forward.  It's located only a short distance from our former building, but it's in many ways a whole new world.  You helped make it possible, and we all thank you for that.

As the dust has been settling (quite literally), we have been preparing for fulfillment as well, and we'll of course have more hard information on that, soon - we're very excited to begin production in earnest now that we're (mostly) settled into our new home.

Here's a short teaser of the video we're working on currently to document the move.

We look forward to sharing more, and of course hitting the ground running on Arsenals!  More to come soon!

Just FIVE DAYS Until BackerKit Lockdown!
almost 6 years ago – Thu, Apr 19, 2018 at 01:43:12 AM

Hello everyone!

We've been largely quiet as the campaign has closed.  Now that the funds are in, and we've gotten rolling on the initial steps of fulfillment while you finish filling out surveys, we're going to resume regular updates.  Let's jump right in!

BackerKit Lockdown

Thank you all for your responses to BackerKit - the vast majority of you have responded and filled everything out.

This update is a reminder that BackerKit will lock down in five days, on Monday, April 23.  What does this mean?

After lockdown,

  • You will be unable to edit your order to add or change your items
  • You will be able to edit your shipping address
  • If you added items to your order beyond your Kickstarter pledge total, you will be charged any balance due to the card you provided BackerKit on April 27, next Friday.  Note that if you did not add additional items to your order, and did not enter your card information on BackerKit, this does not apply to you.

Progress Report: The Road to Fulfillment

Let's briefly review the timeline again:

  • Done! Kickstarter campaign closes, BackerKit pre-orders open.
  • Done! Kickstarter processes all pledges
  • Done! BackerKit survey issued
  • April 23: BackerKit survey lockdown
  • April 27: BackerKit charges processed (if applicable)
  • August, 2018: Fulfillment begins
  • February/March, 2019: Fulfillment concludes!

So what happens once the surveys are locked down? Well, possibly the hardest part: the dreaded wait. On our end, we are currently ordering and receiving lumber, as well as finalizing the process for crafting Master Vaults and Pencils.  After that - it's time to enter production and craft all of your rewards!

You may be wondering, since BackerKit hasn't been locked, how did we know what to order?  Good question!  We waited until we had a solid, representative sample of answers - about 80% - and extrapolated some rough estimates from that.  We then padded those estimates, just to be safe, and placed our orders based on that.  We should have everything covered, but of course, once final numbers are in, we'll verify and make any adjustments necessary, should we require a bit more of anything than we expected.

In the meantime, here's some photos of some of the lumber we've received.  We hope you can appreciate the potential - you might be looking at your Master Vault right now!

Kickstarter allows us to expand our wood offerings greatly, by letting us order larger quantities that we'll use to produce pieces that we know are spoken for - meaning we don't have to find a place to stock them afterwards, and aren't sitting on large stocks of exotic lumber we don't know whether or not we'll need.  It's the primary reason for our campaigns, and it's exciting and beneficial for you, our backers, making it a real win/win!

More information soon to come, and we'll be sure to send out a brief update prior to lockdown.  Of course, don't hesitate to reach out with any last minute questions!

After lockdown, we'll be able to see a complete breakdown of what was ordered and plot out production fully. We can't wait to see how it all shakes out - and get to work building!

Watch your email - BackerKit surveys are OUT!
about 6 years ago – Fri, Mar 23, 2018 at 05:56:31 PM

Hello backers!

BackerKit Surveys are on the Way!

Just a very brief update to let you know the BackerKit surveys are being sent out right now!  We have received the funds from Kickstarter, so that's great news, too.  At your earliest convenience, follow the link in your survey email and fill out your orders.

As per the timeline we posted in the last update, you have a full month to finalize your orders - they lock down on April 23.  However, we'll be checking in frequently as data comes in, and basing our early material sourcing on that, so as soon as you have a solid idea of what you want - even if it may change later - please let us know by filling out your BackerKit survey. :)

The Dice Situation

Reviewing the survey results, based on everyone that answered so far, the most popular answer was brand new dice.  The second most popular was the original dice.  Relatively few people wanted us to source lookalikes.

However, it wasn't a slam dunk win for new dice, though it was significantly the most popular (more than half of respondents).

As a result, here's the plan:

We're going to keep attempting to get our current dice through Chessex, as quickly as possible.  Any backers that would like them can get them, though they may be delayed significantly.  We're ALSO going to be sourcing new dice, however.

So, take your pick!  Once you get to BackerKit, you'll find a question about it waiting for you, and you can choose which you would like.  Note that if you received a survey earlier and DID NOT see this question, you should return to answer it at your earliest convenience.  A limited number of surveys were sent early this morning as a test to make sure everything was up and running, and the question had not yet been added to the survey when it went out.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

That's it for this one!  Thanks for your support, have a great weekend, and fill out that survey!  We have lots of lumber to order... once you tell us what it's going to be! ;)

BackerKit Survey Out TOMORROW! Update on Dice, Brief Survey
about 6 years ago – Thu, Mar 22, 2018 at 11:29:19 PM

Hello backers!

We hope you're all doing well!  We haven't said much since the close of the campaign, as we've been hard at work preparing for the survey to go out tomorrow.  You should get an invitation emailed to you during the day, and from there we can officially begin the process.

We're going to be looking at this data closely as it comes in, so the sooner you get your order in, the better!

Let's start by diving into what you can expect when you arrive at BackerKit.

BackerKit

First, let's take a look at our timeline again:

  • Done! Kickstarter campaign closes, BackerKit pre-orders open.
  • In progress! Kickstarter processes all pledges
  • March 23: BackerKit survey issued
  • April 23: BackerKit survey lockdown
  • April 27: BackerKit charges processed (if applicable)
  • August, 2018: Fulfillment begins
  • February/March, 2019: Fulfillment concludes!

When you begin your survey, you'll confirm your pledge tier and shipping location.  This actually an important area of potential confusion.  Because of the way BackerKit works, for the vast majority of you, your pledge tier will most likely be listed as costing $0*.  Don't worry!  You haven't lost your pledge!  This is just a way of tracking your funds correctly.  For details, read on.

The standard way Kickstarter rewards work tends to be simple: you pledge for a specific reward, and pay the associated cost.  That model doesn't work at all for projects like ours that offer many combinations of items and prices.  Just imagine how confusing it would be if every combination of items possible had its own pledge tier!

So, we choose to organize reward levels by estimated shipping date instead.  This gives us the added advantage of being able to pace our production, so as not to "bite off more than we can chew" from a production standpoint (of course, things can go wrong and delays aren't out of the question, but this approach makes that drastically less likely).  We also provide a pledge calculator and pricing, and allow backers to pledge for whatever combination of items they like by "over-pledging," with tier minimums set to the most inexpensive item possible in that tier.

So far, so good!  But BackerKit is set up assuming the Kickstarter project works like most - though it allow for "over-pledging" to purchase add-on items.  However, it assumes the pledge value minimum is for a specific item to start with, and it will subtract that amount from your add-on credit.  That isn't the case for you, so we fix it by making the cost of the reward $0 in BackerKit.  This means ALL your funds get turned into add-on credit.

You'll spend those funds by assigning them to items in the add-on section, which comes directly after answering the survey questions.  You'll add items to your order just as you would on our website, except that you'll be shopping using the credit from the campaign.  Shipping will be automatically calculated, too, so once your done adding the items you pledged for, you'll click "next" and confirm your order.  You may be asked additional questions if, for example, you added an engraving to your order.  After that, you'll submit your order and you're done!

But, what if you miscalculated, or just decided you wanted a little more than you thought, or an extra Master Vault as a gift?  No problem!  BackerKit makes it easy to add funds, as well - you can just add the items, and enter card information right inside BackerKit to pay for the difference.  These cards will be charged later on (similar to how Kickstarter processes pledges), after we lock down the surveys.  See the above timeline for that date.

Stretch Goal Dice!

We have begun the process of lining up the dice we'll need to fulfill the stretch goal bonuses, and have run into some headwinds.  It seems Chessex, our custom dice manufacturer, will likely be unable to produce the quantities we need by the time we need them.  Note that this is only true for the stretch goal bonus dice for all backers - we don't anticipate issues stocking the number of sets ordered on top of those.

This leaves us in a bit of a bind.  We see a few possible ways to proceed:

  • We wait for Chessex to produce the dice as shown, and they either ship with orders, or by themselves after the other items.
  • We source dice from a new manufacturer, and do our best to match the dice colors and patterns of our current logo dice.
  • We source dice from a new manufacturer, and go with an entirely new design and color lineup.

Option 1 retains what we've shown and planned on, but is likely to result in delays and added cost (on our end) to deal with the multiple shipments.

Option 2 would solve the delays, but it may not be able to work, in the event we can't find a manufacturer that can replicate the existing designs well.

Option 3 we can certainly get done, but the resulting dice will be different than we've offered before.  If we go this route, we'll keep you in the loop and show you the lineup as best we can as we proceed, but they'll be different from what we've offered in the past, and we know this could be upsetting.

We've set up a quick survey page if you want to register an opinion on these approaches:.  You can find that here.

You can also feel free to elaborate in the comments.  Your feelings definitely are paramount and we want to ensure you're happy more than anything, so your responses mean a lot to us.

Obviously, the situation isn't ideal, especially if you were getting a set of logo dice and were looking forward to the new set matching, or similar cases.  We'll work with you in such cases to make sure we find a solution, so, as always, don't hesitate to direct message us your concerns.  We are sorry for the inconvenience, but we'll be working hard to find a solution that works for everyone.

But for now, we're just looking for your feedback on our options.  We'll continue to work hard on preparations for all three angles - we're in talks with Chessex and other manufacturers now - until we make an ultimate determination on which course to take.
